tl;dr verdict: Good first episode.
I think I have a weak spot for sports anime. Battery is no exception to the rule, and the characters introduced so far are engaging. This anime also offers a bonus– the voice actor who voices Takumi also voices Kei Tsukishima from Haikyuu. (Takumi and Kei seem to share very similar personalities too, yay for coincidences?)
Plot-wise, there are a few conflicts laid out already: the class difference between Takumi and Gou, Takumi’s hand injury, and possibly sibling rivalry between Takumi and Seiha. The hand injury conflict is particularly intriguing, because Takumi clearly exemplifies self-confidence, as if trying to ignore his newfound weakness. At the same time, a lack of communication between him and his parents (them not understanding why he took so long jogging) is probably contributing to his inability to deal with the issue.
Halfway through the episode, I felt like something was off. The pacing was a little slow, but that didn’t seem to be the issue. And then it hit me– I hadn’t heard background music in a while. To imagine the difference that makes!
Overall, I was happy with the first episode and will continue to watch the series.
