This week’s episode showcases the top 12 singers who vy for spots among the top 6.

Four singers (one from each team) go first. Yu Tian sings 小镇姑娘. Oh my gosh. Beautiful interpretation. His voice has a honey quality to it, so sweet. And perhaps for the first time in this competition he belts a part in the interlude (during the fiddle duet) – and it’s very strong. Dang. This is a strong opener. The 51 judges vote on whether or not he has the privilege of moving onto the Bird’s Nest part of the competition (aka the next stage).

Judges’ votes: 24

Studio audience votes (out of 350): 239

Next up is Zhao Xiao Xi, who sings 我要我们在一起. Once again, his falsetto notes are pretty much perfectly showcased. I like the “aiyoaiyo” part he sings, it’s so catchy. And I absolutely love how he builds up to the climax of like half-screaming the high note. Perhaps the future Michael Jackson of China, I foresee. He really infected the audience with his energy, even the other judges admit, even Jay Chou and Na Ying. Xiao Xi says he’s very thankful Harlem “saved” him in the last round. One of the 51 judges mentions this is a refreshing interpretation of an older song.

Judges’ votes: 18

Studio audience votes: 302

Next is Li Pei Ling, who sings 我知道你很难过. This is a nice change from the previous two songs, which were more upbeat and energetic, being a sad ballad. Honestly I think she could debut right now and become a very popular singer. Her voice not only has a pure tone, but also has depth and is not nasally. “Is this really sung by a real person?” Na Ying comments. Na Ying says that people are able to sing well when they experience more of life, and perhaps that is part of the reason Pei Ling sings so well. The judges say she has good vocal control.

Then it’s Xu Geyang’s turn. She sings 异类. Hm, I think I like her past covers a little more. The start of the song is like a rock rap (I dunno how to describe this) but it sounds kind of awkward, like she’s trying too hard to sound all tough. The singing parts are better, especially the chorus. She’s definitely got the power in her voice though. Jay Chou says he can see that Geyang has improved and predicts she will get to go to the Bird’s Nest. Geyang says this whole journey has been worth it.

Judges’ votes: 40

Studio audience votes: 344 (Dang! out of 350!)

Xiang Yang sings Desperado and haha at first I thought it was going to be the Desperado by Rihanna. But no, the original artist is called Eagles. Xiang Yang switches from English to Chinese halfway through the song, and his pronunciation shows vast improvement from past stages. His technique, his ability to express emotion, changing from falsetto to chest voice – all of this is done masterfully. Even if he doesn’t win this competition, he’s probably going to be a popular artist in the future. Wang Feng says his strongest point is perhaps his ability to relax on stage. One of the judges suggests he not sing so much English next time.

Judges’ votes: 47 (daaaaaaaang)

Ji Kehao is next. Yes go Team Harlem! And yes, he starts with his signature bleating sound!! (Forgive my fangirling spirit.) He sings 滚滚红尘, which is suited to his voice perfectly. His voice has a tropical, fresh air type feel. It’s difficult to describe, but I always feel like he’s singing about faraway places. Harlem says Ji Kehao has a unique vocal color, and that he’s able to sing a song as an ideal world. Ji Kehao thanks his family for travelling so far for coming to support him. He also thanks Liu Wentian from Team Wang Feng who helped him understand how to sing this song.

Then we have Su Li Sheng, who sings 私奔. I’m actually not too impressed with the song this time (his past performances were really good though), mostly because I’m starting to think he follows the same type of routine while singing ballads. Staying relatively controlled for the first verses, until the last verses / chorus where he releases all the power in his voice. I mean, it’s effective, but I wonder if there’s other ways to interpret the song. Na Ying reveals that apparently when Li Sheng gets too emotional while singing, he sometimes forgets the lyrics, but thankfully that didn’t happen tonight.

Judges’ votes: 30

Studio audience votes: 327

Next up is Jiang Dun Hao, who sings 傻瓜. I like this song a lot. He’s got a gritty voice that suits the sorrow in the song. Probably prefer this over Su Li Sheng’s performance this time around. It might also have to do with song choice, but regardless, Dun Hao puts up a heartfelt performance. Wang Feng says he has a mature voice, and Jay Chou says the song is fitting. He also wishes his mother a happy birthday and comments that when the stage lit up it kind of looked like a big birthday cake. Haha, that’s cute.

Low-key duo sings 夜空中最亮的星. Their singing is pretty good, but I’m just not a big fan of the girl’s vocals. The rap starts, and I start nodding my head along to the beat, but again, I feel like they’re slightly off-beat in some parts. The judges say it was an interesting move to have the guy sing first in the beginning verse, before the girl joined in. The girl comments that this opportunity helped solidify their dreams to pursue music. The guy says they will keep working hard and work towards the future.

Yang Meina is next, singing 春泥. Sounds like a Kdrama OST, interestingly. I like her interpretation but I’m not in love with the song itself. It seems to have too slow of a pace, as if dragging along with heavy vocals, and the flow is almost disrupted by its beat. However, Meina’s belted notes are great, reminiscent of her first audition of Rihanna’s Diamonds. One of the judges comments that Meina’s rendition is filled with power and allows one to experience the meaning and emotion of the song more readily.

Judges’ votes: 38

Studio audience votes: 311

Next is Wang Chen Rui, who sings 你还要我怎么样. Hm, I like her interpretation, which once again is very technically advanced. However, I think I still prefer the original sang by Xue Zhiqian. I think she also is somewhat off-key at some parts. Jay Chou says she has a wide vocal range and Wang Feng says she really understands vocal control. Wang Chenrui thanks Na Ying for teaching her how to be more brave in front of a large audience since she used to fear performing in front of many people.

Liu Wen Tian sings 地心. Dang, it sounds really good. And that buildup into the chorus *clap clap clap* The performance feels legendary. I was originally listening to the songs with one earbud in one earbud out, but I put them both in to fully enjoy his performance. Wang Feng says he has a deep understanding of the song. One judge says he’s touched all of their emotions.

Judges’ votes: 34 (I expected more…)

I personally like Yu Tian too, but it seems like he gained alot of haters since episode 10, where he got saved by Jay and Pu Xiang was eliminated. He was then criticized on Weibo, and haters said that he got saved because of his grandmother who kept on shouting for Jay to save him. Jay saved him but Pu Xiang got eliminated. When I watched this episode, I can see that the audience didn’t really favour him too (239 out of 350? That’s the lowest vote out of all the contestants)

I like Jike Hao too!!! I really love his voice and his bleating (so cute haha). Most of my favourites were eliminated and I was quite sad too 😦 Harlem’s team was quite strong at first, but I guess the judges didn’t really like the style of music in Harlem’s team. (I like both Harlem’s team and Wang Feng’s team but I lean more towards Harlem’s team)

Nathan was a strong opponent too and wow I was quite shocked when he got number 1. To be honest I didn’t really expect that. Liu Wen Tian did great, but too bad he was eliminated 😦 Ge Yang teared up a little when they announced Wen Tian’s result (awwwwwww) Low-Key duo was one of my favourites too, but I have to admit, their past performances were much better. Pei Ling’s performance didn’t really amaze me this time, and it seems like she forgot one line of her lyrics at a point (not that sure). I prefer her Fight Song.

Was quite glad that Dun Hao got into finals. Honestly, I like his mature voice hahaha, and he’s quite good looking too (is it just me haha) But I will side Pei Ling now, since I’m a Malaysian 🙂

My favourites are Xiao Xi, Jike Hao, Zheng Jia Wen, Low-Key duo, Yu Tian, Dun Hao, Ge Yang, Pei Ling. I definitely miss Zheng Jia Wen, he’s my favourite among my favourites. 🙂

You bring up a good point about Yu Tian. I think you’re right, many people seem to have wanted Jay Chou to save Pu Xiang instead. I just feel like it’s too bad because his performance this time was quite good.

I wasn’t too big of a fan of Zheng Jia Wen, but I will say his cover of “Goodbye My Lover” was nice and memorable.

Xiao Xi’s “Ai yo ai yo ai yo” can be infectious. Pei Ling’s “Xin yu du zhong” melody is incredible.

The KISS guy sang a pretty nice song : jumpy, punchy and catchy. I thought he would score enough points to get in. Maybe this song is more for entertainment than for competition.

I thought Xiaoxi did great too, but he ended up getting not so many audience votes sadly. 😦 He’s got such a beautiful falsetto though.

Most of my favorites are already out of the competition, which is too bad.

My prediction for the winner is… either Nathan Hartono or Wang Chen Rui.

Nathan improved a lot from performance to performance, if in the final he do better than top 12 performance, I think he might win.

Wang Chen Rui is the black sheep (I think) in this competition. But yes, she’s good and Na Ying choose great songs that suited her a lot! I didn’t expect her to go this far because her type of voice and songs (usually) didn’t survive this long. Maybe because there were many unique styles this season, so she can go this far…

And for Yang Meina… So sad that she was the remaining performer from team Harlem. I thought team harlem had the strongest team this season, but I guess I was wrong… I love Ji Kehao (for his tropical-rainforest-ish type of arrangements and voice) compared from Yang Meina (who really didn’t impress me except from her audition song, diamonds). AND I still felt so bad that Yao Xi didn’t make it to TOP 12. I think, if it was not Xiaoxi, she might be go through the TOP 6… 😢😢😢

I’m not really a fan of Wang Chen Rui’s voice but good for her that she got #2 spot this round! She is quite technically advanced with vocal control.

I thought Team Harlem was strongest too!! T_T I guess not. And who I thought was the strongest singer turned out to not be so great this round (Meina) whereas I felt like Xiaoxi and Ji Kehao deserved to go on. Sigh.

It’s also a shame that Li Ruixuan, who was on Team Harlem, didn’t make it to top 12.

It seems that Wang Feng actually got the strongest team this season with his two students that made it through having the highest audience score of all. Especially Jiang Dun Hao, 348 votes out of 350? Damn son. I can see why he’s popular though, sings well and looks nice to boot. As for his teammate, I don’t think she should have made it through this time, Ge Yang had always managed to ovecome her lack of technical skills by emoting but not this time. This time her lack of abilities clearly shine through, especially during the first few verses. Admittedly she did better as the song went on, maybe it was due to nerves too but the begining was just unlistenable to me. I very much enjoyed the original version sung by Hua Chenyu so my expectations migt have been a tad too high for her.

Onto the others! I had to admit I was shocked that Low Key placed so low in the rankings, they had always seem to be a fan favourite and eventhough their performace this week was slightly lacking compared to their last I still thought they would managed to pull through. Both the girls from Naying’s team have too similar a style, were it not for their looks I won’t be abke to tell them apart. But how cute was the bunny in Pei Ling’s performance? I love that extra touch!

The final winner seems to be within grasp of all of the top 6 to be honest. Not like last year, where even in the semifinals, Zhang Lei clearly dominates the rest. Who do you guys think would be crown the champion of this season? Would someone finally managed to put an end the Na Ying’s winning streak?

I actually wasn’t too shocked that Low Key didn’t move on this time. The guy may be technically advanced with his rap, but I do think they could work on intonation, especially in the singing parts.

I was really surprised that Dun Hao placed so high. I mean, I like his singing, but I don’t think it’s *that* good?

I also thought Ge Yang could have sang better this time. I think Liu Wentian deserved to move on more than she did this time…

If I had to guess a winner, I’m going with either Li Peiling or Nathan Hartono. However, they both aren’t technically from China, and don’t know if that will affect any of their results.

Thanks so much for the recaps 🙂 Sad about Lui Wentian.
While I love Lee Pei Ling (as I am a Malaysian), I think she can’t emote that well. I could not quite feel the emotions from her over the past two rounds. Voice and technique wise, I think she’s superb.

Ayyyyy I’m half-Malaysian too! 😀 I think Li Peiling will certainly have a long career if she chooses to pursue singing – I can totally imagine her as a idol star. She is actually quite good with singing but I agree with you, these past two rounds I think were subpar performances compared to her first few songs.

I am so sad about Liu Wentian. T___________T He will be sorely missed in the competition. Can’t believe he didn’t move on. I think he was my favorite performance this episode, along with Ji Kehao.

I fell that a number of the judges are a tad conservative in their taste while the audience is more appreciative of different styles. Ji Kehao was great but I (sadly) never figure he would move on. Same went for Xiaoxi.
I really preferred Yao Xi to Su Lisheng but….
        Looking forward to the finals!!!
P.S. Nathan is really good. I didn’t like him in the blind audition… felt he overdid the emoting. But, he grew on me hahaha
P.P.S. Will you be doing any KDrama recaps?

I felt so bad for Yao Xi when she failed to move on by one vote… And then felt even more bad for her when Su Li Sheng’s performance this time wasn’t as exemplary as his past songs…

I was rooting for Ji Kehao since the first round, sigh *I shall miss his bleating sound*

I probably won’t be doing Kdrama recaps, for two reasons. 1) I feel like there are already many sites out there that produce excellent quality Kdrama recaps (ie Dramabeans, Koala’s Playground) and if I recapped something there wouldn’t be as much views lol, and 2) I actually don’t speak Korean so it would take me a little more time and effort to recap than say, Cdramas. 😀

It will be interesting to see how the finals play out. My gut feel is Nathan Hartono, unless he chokes in the finals. And not being in China may be a plus point for them via their ‘exoticness’.

But I will cheer for Li Pei Ling all the same hahahah

I read recaps more that I watch the shows (lack of time lol). I have not watched a Cdrama in the heavens know how long. Recently started on Kdramas due to influence from colleagues. Surrounded by Kdrama fans.

            Have you travelled to Malaysia?

Yes I think Nathan has a strong chance of winning. It is also to his advantage that he is good looking and young – many record companies will probably want to sign him.

Ah yes I love Kdramas as well 🙂 I haven’t been watching many lately though just because I’ve been so busy. Totally understand reading recaps more than watching — that’s what I often do too heehee.

Hope you will get to travel to Malaysia one day. Nasi lemak and nasi goreng eh? You’re not ‘half-Malaysia’, you’re fully Malaysian hahahah And what do you think of durians? :p You must try roti canai (Singaporeans call it roti prata) if you have yet to.

I’ve heard about Moonlight Drawn by the Clouds (it’s the one starring Park Bo Gum and Kim Yoo Jung, right?) and it seems like a cute plot. I just can’t bring myself to watch it because of the age gap… especially since she’s still a minor… but the OTP seems cute.

I like durian! I used to not like it because of the strong smell, but after trying durian ice cream I have since then been converted to a durian fan 😛 I love roti canai!! The curry sauce that often accompanies it is yummy too.

Yeah, that’s the one with Park Bo Gum and Kim Yoo Jung. And it is slightly squicky cuz of the age gap. Same goes for Bring it on Ghost! But the shows (both of them) are really good, and the cast on both are excellent. Moonlight is really funny too.

      Sigh.

At least Nathan moved on (with #1 rank!!) 😀
