Wanna One ‘Beautiful’ Review

wanna one, wanna one profile, wanna one members, wanna one park jihun, wanna one ong seongwoo wanna one comeback, wanna one 1-1=0, wanna one nothing without you, wanna one concept photos, wanna one teaser

After a more upbeat debut track ‘Energetic’ and standard boy group swag song ‘Burn it Up’, Wanna One is back with a more somber ballad ‘Beautiful’. The song is definitely better than the previous two songs, but it’s also very standard Kpop. I thought ‘Beautiful’ was more of a B-side than title track due to its relative safe melody.

Then again, this group can afford the safe, boring melody because they’re arguably the number one trending boy group in Korea right now. No one really cares if they come out with a shit song.

I wasn’t even mad at the unoffending melody. I was just a bit annoyed that the MV seemed to feature three members while giving literally 2 seconds of screentime to some other members. I understand that Daniel is the center, but come on, the moped probably got more screentime than Guanlin, Daehwi, Woojin, Jaehwan, or Bae Jin Young. (Jisung, Minhyun, and Sungwoon didn’t get much time either.)

Perhaps even more insulting is the horrible MV execution, with a seemingly random / cliched plotline. I’d rather watch Wanna One sit around just talking for eight minutes than watch this contrived drama. This MV rivals their previous ‘Burn it Up’ MV where a horse actually morphs into Daniel.

I wasn’t really impressed with either Energetic or Burn it Up, they are rather generic kpop and sort of… uninteresting, playing it safe.

I now that Wanna One has a huge following but I was actually lot more taken with another pd101 debut, namely JBJ’s. Fantasy isn’t all that original song either but the guys totally sell it. And it helps that there isn’t gzillion of them so all get their time in the limelight. The choreo (which I love btw) gives each the center spot in turn.

Yes, I really like Fantasy too!! Except I think it sounds better at 1.25x the original speed lol. I was really surprised at how good JBJ’s song was — thought it was better than Wanna One’s.
